Wildebeest Migration

Wildebeest Migration

Description

The Wildebeest Migration, also known as the Great Migration, is one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife events on Earth. It takes place annually across the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, migrate in search of fresh grazing and water, following a circular route of over 1,800 miles (2,900 km). This incredible journey is driven by seasonal rainfall and involves dramatic river crossings, predator-prey encounters, and scenic landscapes.

Migration Timeline Overview

December – March: Calving season in southern Serengeti (Ndutu region).

April – June: Migration begins northward through the central Serengeti.

July – October: River crossings into the Maasai Mara (Kenya).

November: Herds start moving south again.
